Our Aadhaar has become more secure now. UIDAI has introduced a facility on its website to enable people to lock or unlock their Aadhar card online. With the introduction of this very important feature, no other third party can either read or access any of your personal details from the UIDAI server.

105 crore people have been issued Aadhaar numbers each having unique combination of 12-digits. The UID (Unique Identification Number) corresponds to your personal bio metric and demographic details like your name, father’s name, date of birth, mobile number, address and bio metric details viz., your iris scan, fingerprints and your photograph. Since all these information are stored online, it is vital to safeguard them from third party to protect the privacy of the Aadhar card holder. Thus, UIDAI has come ahead with a much needed and vital feature which will enable the Aadhar card holder to lock or unlock his/her Aadhar card online.

How to Lock Aadhar Card Online

Follow the below steps to lock your Aadhar card online:

1. Click on this link to Lock Aadhar Card
2.  Type your Aadhar Card Number in the first field.
3. Type the Security Code in second field.
4. Click on “Generate OTP” button.
5. Now, you will receive OTP on your registered mobile number. Fill it in Enter OTP field and click on “Verify” button.
6. Tick Mark the “Enable Bio metric Locking“.
7. Click on “Enable” button. 
8. If you see a success message on screen then you are done. Your Aadhar card bio metric details are locked now.

How to Unlock Aadhar Card Online

Follow the below steps to unlock your Aadhar card online:

1. Click on this link to Unlock Aadhar Card
2. Type your Aadhar Card Number in the first field.
3. Type the Security Code in second field.
4. Click on “Generate OTP” button.
5. Now, you will receive OTP on your registered mobile number. Fill it in Enter OTP field and click on “Verify” button.
6. Tick Mark the “Disable Bio metric Locking“.
7. Click on “Disable” button.
8.  If you see a success message on screen then you are done. Your Aadhar card bio metric details are unlocked now.

After locking your Aadhar card once, no one will be able to read your details from the UIDAI server. Its biggest use will come when you have lost your Aadhar card letter and are worried that someone else might use it illegally. You can also unlock it anytime you want by going through the steps mentioned above. Locking and Unlocking of Aadhar card can be done online only.
